Synopsis
The old priests have fallen, the Demons are no more, but Kandrina has yet to find out what really killed her brother. Her need for revenge takes her and her former teacher on a perilous journey into uncharted territory. They must travel north, into the lands of the fearsome lizard men known as the Li Buqu. Meanwhile, the tribal lands are under attack from predators, not to mention the internal conflicts between the Vice-Chiefs which threaten to disrupt the People's way of life.
My Thoughts
Beyond the Serpent, Hills is the second book in Kitty Lewis Legends of the Lost Tribes series. This book begins with the explanation of the difficulty of the names and gives the pronunciations and a history of the Lizard People, Li Buqu.
As with the first book, The Colourless, the world building in Beyond the Serpent Hills is well written. I thought this being the second book it would provide more details on the Colourless and instead it took us to a different land with an eclectic group. We see lizard people, elves with wide-brimmed hats, and dwarfs that play fiddles.
I felt this was ok as we know that the protagonists Kandrina is a young explorer and much of this read is about new discoveries.
This book is also an opportunity for the writer to express that the timid change when they are faced with loss. We see how the meek become vengeful. And this read shows that even though there are similarities, the emotions and hardships of battle are often overpowering.
I received this book from Beacon Publishing Group for an honest review.
