Description

As people around him come under attack, Chief Detective Koa Kāne wonders if he might be the real target.

In the back alley of a bar on Hawaii Island, a young man is found stabbed to death. When Hilo Chief Detective Koa Kāne begins investigating the crime, the murder weapon is recovered only a few feet away from the body. Crime scene technicians find fingerprints on the knife—they are a perfect match for Koa’s younger brother, Ikaika.

As the brothers scramble to prove Ikaika’s innocence, another crime sends shockwaves through the Hilo police force. A sniper tries to take out Makanui, Koa’s closest colleague. As Koa tries to figure out whether these crimes are linked, the sinister force continues their killing spree, threatening Koa and his loved ones at every turn.

Could Koa be the real target? If so, who is behind this trail of retribution? With his own secret criminal past, Koa confronts an all-out offensive against those closest to him and his police force to which he has devoted his life. As the bodies pile up, Koa finds himself the ultimate target of a ruthless adversary and must risk it all to survive.

I received a copy of the Advanced Reader's Edition through FSB Associates.

 Review: Retribution  by  Robert McCaw

It’s funny how you can be in the middle of something, and your eye is drawn to the title of a book. You can't seem to take your eye off the book and immediately you walk over and pick it up. And that is how I ended up reading the Advanced Reader's Edition of Retribution by Robert McCaw.

If you don't know anything about McCaw he practiced law for around four decades and began to write mysteries. He was fascinated by the history of Hawaii and chose Chief Detective Koa Kāne to be the protagonist in the Koa Kāne Series. Retribution is the fifth book in the series.

l like that Koa Kane has an interesting past that plays into each story and we soon see how this transitions into the present day. In many of his books, we get a view of the stigmatization of having a criminal past and learn how there is always hope for a better path.

In this story, a group is bombarding the Hilo Law Enforcement community and someone appears hell-bent on attacking Koa’s family, closest friends, and colleagues. Koa's brother, Ikaika, is framed and that sets the framework for one of the most reliable forms of evidence in many criminal cases - encoded in DNA. Keeping an open mind, detectives diligently work to rule out sources using extracted DNA.

Retribution, combines atmospherics, Hawaiian language, and expression with hidden arsenals, attempted murders, and bombings. Wouldn't you think the natural reaction to these events would be an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth?

I'd recommend this book to readers of mystery,  and/or crime thrillers.
