Review: Working from Home: Slacker to Superstar by J.S. Kirby

Did you know in this age of growing digitization of work and workforce automation three in five workers still have jobs that require them to leave home to complete them?

These are often positions where you are providing physical service to customers. However, with the use of online systems, we are being geared towards a world where much of what we do daily will be online and this is much more prevalent today than it was back in the 1990s.

However, my mind drifted back to then and I thought of a time when the movie The Net starring Sandra Bullock hit the box office.

In this movie, Sandra Bullock plays Angela Bennett. Angela is a cybersecurity specialist who works from home. The movie was about the rise of technology and gave us a glimpse of how it impacts our lives and shows how it can parlay into privacy concerns. However, when I watched the movie I looked at the plot from the standpoint that Angela's remote work afforded her more freedom. And, I found this so alluring that it lead me to go from a service job where I was commuting to work daily to searching for a remote job I could do from home. I found a job, established a home office, and worked remotely for a time. Since then, the market for remote work has expanded greatly.

Going forward this book speaks to the importance of job satisfaction and one of the things we should ask ourselves is -what will I do that keeps me satisfied?

This book tells us the most common remote jobs today are web developers, coders, managers, and data analysts.

Kirby also addresses something I struggled with when working from home. Isolation. Yes - I definitely felt isolated but things were different back then. All of my communication was through email and FedEx as we did not have access to all the video telephony products we do today.

Need some helpful tips on self-motivation? This book provides tips on starting small and staying realistic and how to set boundaries with our standards of communication. This is extremely important otherwise you may find yourself driven to answer a text or a call every time it comes in which can hinder sleep and a healthy lifestyle.

Staying in touch with colleagues is also very important when working and the final chapter looks at how social media can assist us in upgrading and improving skills for the remote workforce.

Moving ahead the easiest way to possibly look at job hunting is like any other adventure - using the SODAS Method, Situation, Options, Disadvantages, Advantages, and Solution.
