Review: VOICE: Voice Training for Podcasters, Speakers, Presenters and Business Professionals
This comprehensive guide was written by Stephan Lendi, the voice behind IMAX movies and brands like Coca Cola and is designed to help readers learn more about, the voice's full potential in the professional realm and stresses the importance of what we say, but also of how we say it.
This guide is divided into 10 easy-to-understand chapters and offers vocal techniques that support the power of the voice for effective communication and gives examples of how voice can be used to enhance an audience and assert authority.
Have you ever lost your voice and had to rely on nonverbal communication? Perhaps you then learned the importance and value of having a voice.
Do you listen to Podcast? From time to time I do. This occasionally occurs when I seek out someone that interests me that is being interviewed on a podcast. I then click on that link to watch the interview. If I feel the podcast is dragging, I go to another link. This guide reminds us that the pace and rhythm of our speech greatly influences the emotional impact of our message.
Have you had to give a presentation to others? Most of us know the sound of our voice can communicate our state of mind and research tells us that attractive male voices are around 96 Hz while attractive women voices are up to 280 Hz. This guide discusses articulation and harnessing the emotional range of our voices.
All the exercises were doable but one that first threw me was repeating the list of grocery items which is to be used as the middle speaking voice for a relaxation technique. I found that I focused on the string of MHMs and forgot the importance of exhaling.
I believe using our voice to express empathy to others is highly important and this guide suggests we adopt a warm and compassionate vocal tone.
Of the many exercises through this read that has helped me the most is Video Analysis as I could record myself speaking and watch and listen and practice delivering again.
Above all of the chapters in this guide, my favorite was Voice Maintenance and Self-Care which discusses the importance of Vocal Rest and Recovery.
