Review: The Child Wore Pearls
I was immediately pulled into the young adult suspense novel by Louisiana native, Morgan Matthews titled The Child Wore Pearls.
At the beginning of this story, we see June Randolph and her mother Lorraine have a complicated relationship as they've not worked together to understand one another. June is close to her dad though and he is thrilled that June Bug helps him run his jewelry store "Edward Randolph, Jeweler”.
Seventeen-year-old June usually works well with customers and she shares my love for finishing every day with her nose buried in a book. And I smiled from ear to ear when she mentioned listening to county music legend Tanya Tucker who cut Delta Dawn when she was only 13.
I could identify with June choosing to wear a crossbody purse with high-top Converse sneakers. But when Mrs. Roxie Wright, who has class and money, took June shopping, we saw June come out of her shell and adopt a new somewhat contrived look.
Much of the story is about June interacting with life's events. Secrets from Lorraine's past begin to threaten June’s moments of happiness and we find June questioning her parents about a private investigator.
This story appeared to be an easy read populated with characters that feel authentic and then a little over halfway through the book, something sinister happens.
I received a copy of this book from Morgan Matthews for my honest review.
