Storytelling with Charts Sam Schreim

Lately, I’ve been hanging out at bookstores, looking at all the cool stuff that Booktubers are posting, reading books, and reading books about books.

I don't feel it is unusual for an author to decide to buy a book to help them grasp the important topics to help them relay their story.

The book StoryTelling with Charts - The Full Story: The Ultimate Playbook to Master the Art and Science of Captivating Audiences by Telling Stories With Data and Framework Charts is about creating a book with impactful visuals. This book is broken down into 5 easy-to-comprehend chapters that use a powerful 5 - step framework.

  1. WHAT IS STC?
  2. THE ANATOMY OF STC AND ITS CHARTS
  3. UNIVERSAL FRAMEWORK FOR VERTICAL LOGIC
  4. CHART SELECTION—QUALITATIVE OR CONCEPTUAL CHARTS
  5. HORIZONTAL LOGIC AND STORYLINES

This book gives us the background as to why it is that we like books. It talks about how we humans get great enjoyment from telling engaging stories to one another and reading irresistible narratives.

So basically the story we tell one another allows our audience to paint a picture in their minds of what occurred. Hence the message procludes the chart or visual.

Sam Schreim makes us aware that learning the STC method is similar to learning a language and he relays the importance of utilizing the  80/20 rule in giving/asking. He also touches on using documents in PowerPoint or Keynote so they can easily be converted to video.

At one point Schreim brings up the storyline for the movie Benjamin Button - but forewarns us with the spoiler alert. Later in the book he throws an Albert Einstein quote at us that really makes one think - logically.

We travel back in time and look at a time Before Laptops and Computers when everything was manual and charts were hand drawn and where authors had a plot things out in their mind before collecting the required data. We have gone from a scarcity of data to an abundance of it with the aid of the internet and social media.

Schreim alerts us to Four Types of Charts. There are also cheat sheets, diagrams, look-up tables, quick references, and toolkits included.

This is an informative read. It will help you choose the correct visual to assist in recounting moments that absorb an audience's attention.

I received a copy of this book from Sam Schreim.
