Heal Your Wound: A Doctor's Guide For Hard-To-Heal Wounds by Alvin May, MD

When I received Heal Your Wound: A Doctor's Guide For Hard-To-Heal Wounds, I thought back to my own wound healing.

After one of my surgeries, I had a large visible incision. The kind where people gasp when they see you walking in the hospital corridor.

When I asked my surgeon how many stitches this time, he'd informed me, he stopped counting at one hundred. He then mentioned the healing process would be slow and he couldn't conclude, at that time, whether I might face infection, tissue damage and/or other complications.

Having been through surgeries before, I recognized the importance of staying positive and having patience. Weeks passed into months. I eventually healed and my scar has faded over time.

Dr. May's guidebook Heal Your Wound can help you along your journey. His writing is descriptive and visual. He tells us wounds are unique. He discusses wound colors, appropriate wound cleaners, dressings, and offloading devices. He teaches techniques for pain management and shows us how nutrition and exercise play an important role.

His guidebook is an excellent reference manual. I especially appreciate his details on non-medical actions that can aid in wound healing and ways to accelerate wound healing.
