There is something special about a physical book.
The feel of the pages, the weight of the book in your hands, the cover you can admire, and yes, even that familiar smell of paper and ink. But reading has changed, and that's not necessarily a bad thing.
Today, a book can arrive in the mailbox, be downloaded in minutes, or be listened to while you're driving. Publishers often send ebooks for review, and the convenience of being able to begin a new story almost immediately is hard to resist.
But whether you read a hardcover, paperback, ebook, or audiobook, what matters most is simple:
Our days are filled with screens and endless streams of information. We scroll quickly from one thing to another, often giving something only a few seconds of our attention.
A good book asks us to slow down.
It invites us into another person's world. We meet characters we may never forget, visit places we may never see, and encounter ideas we may never have considered. Sometimes a book entertains us. Sometimes it challenges us. Sometimes it makes us laugh, cry, or look at something familiar in an entirely different way.
And sometimes, a book simply gives us a quiet place to be.
If you're trying to read more, don't worry about how many books you should finish. Reading isn't a race. You don't need to read fifty books a year—or even ten—to call yourself a reader.
Start with something that interests you.
Maybe it's a mystery you've been curious about. A historical novel. A memoir. A romance. A book about gardening, travel, cooking, art, or a subject you've always wanted to understand better.
Follow your curiosity.
And pay attention to what happens when you read.
Did the characters keep you turning the pages? Did you love the setting? Did the writing pull you in? Did you find yourself thinking about the story after you closed the book?
Those little observations can help you discover what you enjoy as a reader and make choosing your next book a little easier.
And don't be afraid to put a book down when it isn't working for you. I've had to do this a few times, and don't regret it.
Sometimes a beautifully written book simply isn't the right book for you. That's okay. Learning what you enjoy—and what you don't—is part of becoming a more confident reader.
There are too many wonderful books waiting to be discovered to believe that you aren't a reader simply because you haven't found the right one yet.
That's one of the reasons I love sharing reviews here at Lori's Book Loft. Hopefully, something you read here will catch your attention—a book you hadn't heard of, an author you've never tried, or perhaps a story that makes you think, I think this one might be for me.
So browse the reviews. Read about something new. Take a chance on a book you might not normally pick up.
And when you find one that sounds good, I hope you'll give it a try.
After all, there's always room for one more book on the TBR.
