Back of the Book

After two years, Lars Preston and Max Curry hoped their controversial past as football players at Indiana Western University was finally behind them. They'd found a new place to play and a fresh start at UC-Camarillo, a smaller school they'd help build into a Division I-AA powerhouse.

During the summer before their senior season, IWU's athletic director calls UC-Camarillo asking for help and offering a huge payday. The Sagamores have run into a scheduling problem and suddenly need a fill-in game, and who better to ask than the former heroes who led IWU to a huge upset three years ago?

Despite the doubts of Preston and Curry, the Thunderbolts are flying to the Midwest to play the No. 6-ranked Sagamores on their home field. By revisiting their past, all the ultimate underdogs hope for is a fair chance, but is it for revenge or redemption?

My Thoughts

I think I’ve boiled down my connection to a great sports fiction read to two things: first, it has to make me believe there's an inkling that what's written can actually occur - like in real life, and second, it has to have some humor in it.

Yeah. That's right! It's pretty much about amusing me.

Does it have to be perfect? "No. But, it does have to have plenty of action and make me laugh."

I’m excited to tell you that Homecoming Game does have this.

Now, I get out my Pom Poms and ROAR

In this book, we get to follow quarterback Lars around. This isn't difficult as he's a likable character and the narrator of the story. Anyway, he and some of his buddies leave Indiana Western University (IWU) and end up playing for the Thunderbolts at UC-Camarillo.

Yes, that's right. They've left Indiana and are playing in the land of beach babes and major traffic delays. And, we see California is a good move for them. At Camarillo, they grow to be a Division I-AA powerhouse, under the guidance of Coach Schebig.

Before the senior season, Lars and Max learn, IWU Sagamores needs a team to do a fill-in game. And they want the Thunderbolts. Lars wonders, would a win even be possible or would the Thunderbolts just be used as punching bags?" Well maybe, with a lot of commitment and preplanned plays, the Thunderbolts could do it. There are like it says on their shirts, NO EXCUSES.

Lars, Max, Jordan, with the help of, snipe hunters, Little Joe and Big Joe, and other teammates prepare. And if they win - it would really put Sagamores coach Jackson is his place. But if they don't, it's not like they're being graded....or were they?

Overall, I felt the story flowed well. I don't follow football so this read technically heavy to me. But, the plays were engrossing and I really liked the character relationships on and off the field. It was great to see the Thunderbolts' level of skill was achieved with the selflessness of players. And you get to see Sagamores players be wickedly awful.

Bottom Line: A touch of class and a little comedy always makes for great sports read. And so it is.

Of Note: This work of fiction has a beautiful message that is beneficial to all.
