The Short Story

My book club generally does a short story read every month, and some months we may read two.  Recent reads for me were stories such as "Lost Face" by Jack London and "Love is a Fallacy" by Max Shulman. This month the book club selected Celeste Ng's short story "Girls, At Play".

I found this to be an extremely emotional read. It's boldly straightforward, descriptive, thought-provoking, and frustrating and left me irritated and slightly queasy. I think much of her writing pushes readers to have a look-see into the lives of her characters and their secrets and the consequences. And, she does this with no pretense. This truly is the type of story where I wish I was there to intercede and will look at bracelets is a new way. This story was a winner of the Pushcart Prize.
