Library House Books & Art

If you want to step back in time a great place to start is in Grand Rapids, Ohio, at Library House Books and Art.

Nestled just a short stroll from the serene banks of the Maumee River, this independently owned used bookstore is a hidden gem waiting to be discovered.

Library House Books & Art is far from your ordinary used bookstore. The moment you step inside, the original hardwood floors creak gently beneath your feet, and you’re greeted by a space that feels alive with creativity—a seamless blend of books, paintings, prints, and even a few friendly animals.

For a bookworm like me, it’s pure heaven. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, the shelves brimming with affordable treasures, each book offering the promise of a new adventure. Whether you’re hunting for a rare find or simply browsing, the store encourages you to linger.

For those who like to settle in for a little reading while exploring, the front of the store features plush velvet chairs, perfect for curling up with a freshly discovered book. Just beyond the cash register, a large wooden library table, adorned with a delicate lilac centerpiece, invites quiet reading or conversation. It’s a space designed not just for buying books, but for experiencing them.

While Library House Books & Art specializes in history, art, and poetry, the collection spans nearly every category, ensuring there’s something for every reader. The children’s section, tucked toward the back of the store, is a veritable treasure trove of colorful picture books. Off to the side, a small table and chairs create a cozy nook where little ones can read, draw, or simply explore the joy of books.

During my visit on a beautiful spring day, I found a delightful collection of gardening books that I couldn’t resist. Vintage and modern titles sat side by side, each one carefully chosen to inspire curiosity and imagination.

Once your arms are full of literary finds, the surrounding village offers even more to explore. Quaint shops and galleries invite you to discover unique gifts—fine art, vintage clothing, and, of course, more bookstores. Restaurants provide cozy spots for a leisurely meal, while specialty shops tempt you with ice cream, old-fashioned sauces, candies, and other delectable treats.

The village is also home to the historic Issac Ludwig Mill, where visitors can take a canal boat ride led by costumed guides who bring 1800s river life to vivid life. The combination of charming streets, engaging history, and a bookstore that feels like home makes a visit to Library House Books & Art an experience to savor—both for the mind and the heart.
