March is National Reading Awareness Month

March is National Reading Awareness Month and celebrates this pass time in honor of the late Dr. Seuss's birthday. This is in hopes of giving children the motivation to read each day.

Reading is one of my favorite past times and it offers many benefits, regardless of your age. Not only does it help with professional development, but it has health benefits such as increased cognitive function and empathy and decreased levels of stress.

Around here, students set a personal goal for  X amount of books read throughout the month.  I've heard some local kids talking about book swapping and there's a business that agreed to give out free food items for every 20 books read. One of the principals has agreed to kiss a pig if the youth collectively read 1000 books.

“The more that you read, the more things you will know,” Dr. Seuss said. “The more you learn, the more places you’ll go."
