Review: ELLEN by Coral McCallum
I enjoy music and was looking for a book about encouragement and inspiration so I selected Ellen.
Ellen is a contemporary romance along a rock music theme and it is also about overcoming tragedy and disfigurement.
I like that many of the characters are realistic. Among their hardships, you have a group that appreciates the music of one of my favorite English rock bands which formed in London in 1968. Imitation is said to be the sincerest form of flattery. So, it may not be surprising that Ellen auditions for the group with a timeless hit with a distinct and unusual rhythm.
You'll find some of the band members' trash apartments. smoke weed and cuss up a storm. Then you have Ellen cussing around her mother and her mother reminding her not to swear. I would have liked her relationship with her mother to be closer but that was not to be.
Ellen is aware of people watching her and many of them recognize that she is self-conscious. She admits she feels like a freak. And she enjoys the comedic ways they come up with to disguise her injuries.
There are fan-favorite songs and standard sets and help from security staff while on tour. Smoke machines are billowing, as Ellen allows applause to envelop her and fans plead for her and the group to return to the stage. There are cheers and a pulse effect and the last verse of the final chorus before the move on to the next venture of their journey.
