Review: Lucky Star by Holly Curtis

I'm gonna confess I like coming-of-age stories where characters are navigating issues- mainly because they cause me to reflect back on my own youth.

I think many of us, when younger, have had times when we felt vulnerable like things were out of wack. Maybe we took on too many projects and didn't find time to help a classmate celebrate their birthday or maybe someone felt bullied or was questioning their identity.

Well,  Lucky Star is a coming-of-age novel, set in the mid-’80s.

Ben 'Somers' Somerset, is 16 years old. He questions what he will do when he leaves school. You'll find that Ben and his fellows get into a fair bit of trouble and then he meets his crush, Susie.

This story includes a lot of nostalgia from the 80s. There is slang and references to music from stars like Madonna and David Bowie

This made me think back to the 80s - a time when it seemed MTV ruled the world.

Those were the days of huge hair and colorful spandex. Shopping malls were all the rage. While some teens were searching store racks for another fishnet top, others were creating their own designer shirts by splattering paint on fabric. And a decent 80s workout often included high-kicking it to Lucky Star.

About the Author

Holly Curtis first book is a comedy called Celluloid and has been hailed as 'possibly the best book ever written about a film lover who tries to prevent his local, independent cinema from being closed and turned into flats by a psychotic gangster property developer.'

Holly's favorite story is A Christmas Carol and loves movies from the 30s-50s.

Holly was born and raised in the UK and will probably perish there.
