Review: INFERTILITY: The Unspoken Hurdles by K.T. Ellie
Infertility is a global health issue affecting millions of people and Infertility the Unspoken Hurdles is the title of this book I was gifted from author K.T. Ellie
Experts say the best time to get pregnant is between your late 20s and early 30s but what happens if this doesn't occur for you?
Ask anyone you know who is infertile how they are dealing with this and they may tell you not well or more honestly state they are miserable.
Infertility is a difficult word to say and even more so if you are faced with this because it is surrounded by such a negative social impact. After all, many of us begin life surrounded by the words/lyrics of nursery rhymes. Words sung so frequently they stick with us for the rest of our lives. Sometimes these words are like a slap in the face when we fear we may never belong to the motherhood club.
There is a certain stigma associated with the loss of the opportunity to pass on family genetics that may be conveyed with feelings of failure, helplessness, and hopelessness. The process can be overwhelmingly depressing leading to anxiety and stress and making one question why in the world has this happened to me?
We know there seem to be endless implications for being infertile and this book looks closely at many of the treatment options: donor eggs, surrogates, natural cycle IVF, drugs to boost ovulation, egg freezing, sperm donors, and so much more.
This book also takes a close look at relationships and the strain infertility can put on them. It speaks to the nitty gritty - the tension and resentments.
I appreciate that the author promotes the importance of utilizing self-care and finding support. She expresses many of the dumb phrases people approach us with and lets us know how journaling and affirmations can help us cope. Above all she lets us know we are not alone in our infertility journey.
