Review: Scars That Never Heal
A Healing Journey: Scars That Never Heal by Latoya McPherson
If you ask different people about scars, you may hear varied definitions. But one thing is clear: scars leave marks that forever remind us of past wounds. In Scars That Never Heal, Latoya McPherson explores this theme deeply, offering a compelling and emotionally charged narrative from its very first page.
The story begins with Carol Carter having a nightmare. She hears keys jangling, followed by footsteps, the stench of alcohol fills the air, and a hand moves up her thigh. Frantically, she kicks out in her sleep, shouting "No, no, no!" She wakes her husband, who is immediately concerned and presses her for an explanation. Carol feels uncomfortable sharing the details of the dream, so her husband doesn’t push her further, but he does encourage her to seek help in understanding her unsettling visions.
Carol decides to take that advice and begins her journey of seeking help to process her past and present. Through flashbacks, we learn about Carol’s family and the trauma she’s endured. The perpetrator of her past actions refuses all forms of treatment and, when confronted, denies any wrongdoing. This denial leaves Carol feeling powerless, grappling with the haunting question of "Why me?"
For years, Carol keeps her secret buried inside. But eventually, she realizes that in order to heal, she must embrace forgiveness and self-love. The book delves deeply into this emotional transformation, showing that recovery involves not only facing the past but also applying compassion and understanding toward oneself.
One of the most powerful aspects of this book is its foundation in biblical scripture, which offers guidance and support throughout Carol’s journey. Additionally, the book emphasizes the importance of therapeutic journaling, providing practical strategies, techniques, and insightful excerpts from Carol’s own experiences and those of others she meets along the way.
This book is not just a story but a guide for those navigating their own healing journeys. Whether you’re dealing with past trauma or simply seeking emotional growth, Scars That Never Heal offers valuable lessons on resilience, forgiveness, and the power of self-love.
I received a copy of this book from Latoya McPherson, and I highly recommend it for anyone interested in personal healing, growth, and the strength that comes from facing one's past.
